Falcon Foresters

Schools: All Elementary Schools

Community Partners: the Albany School District (ASD), the College of St. Rose, the City of Albany, the NYS Department of Education (Project Learning Tree (PLT)), NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (pending), Stewarts Shops, and the SEFCU Foundation

The project brings the nationally recognized and NYS-supported "Project Learning Tree" to elementary schools throughout the Albany School District and trains elementary-school teachers in specifics about the program. It will ultimately involve 660 elementary-school children in Falcon Forester activities with year-round action-oriented lessons and Arbor Day tree planting. In addition mini grants are available to encourage innovative "green" activities in our schools. 

Creating an Urban Meadow

School: Harriet Gibbons High School

Community Partners: Sharron Hoffman and Julia Vonder Reith - Permaculture and Horticultural experts; Judy Stacey, City Gardener- equipment use and mulch; the Albany Art Room- design space and materials; the Catherine Street neighbors; and the Albany Charity for Arts in Education – landscape plan and sculpture materials.

The students are Harriet Gibbons High School will take part in a landscaping and 
permaculture project on a vacant lot at 86-88 Catherine Street activities, under the supervision of Science and Art teachers from the HGHS.  Neighborhood volunteers will compliment the function of the design and maintenance of the site.  The students will be involved with soil remediation through soil testing and planting, designing drawings and plans, planting and clean up, and creating sculpture for the garden

 

AHS Male Mentoring Program

School: Albany High School

Community Partners: National Black Child Development Institute, Fathers Incorporated, Fathers and Families Coalitions of America, Mt. Calvary Baptis Church, and Christian Memorial Church

This project will engage male students in an intensive mentoring program that will empower them to take the necessary next steps to attain a college or vocational degree or sustainable employment.   Male students who are seniors will meet with mentors bi-monthly during the school year and will participate in various educational field trips.

Multiculturalism in Meyers

 

School: Stephen and Harriet Meyers Middle School

Community Partners: Albany Jewish Community Center, Latino Community, Italian Community Center

 

This project will establish and International Club and involve community groups to build bridges and positive relationships between students from various racial and ethnic groups.
