Scholar’s Institute

Schools: Arbor Hill Elementary School, Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy, Sheridan Preparatory Academy, Giffen Elementary Schools 

Community Partner: Sage Colleges 



The Scholar’s institute is held three nights a week on the SAGE Campus in Albany with the goal of inspiring students to continue their education and attend college.


American Studies Olympiad

School: Albany High School International Baccalaureate Program

Community Partners: The Albany/Tula Alliance, the Schenectady High School,

Students and teachers in the IB program will participate in the American Studies Olympiad to be held in Albany’s sister city, Tula, Russia, from March 1 to April 13, 2012.


Weather All Around Us 

School: Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy 

Community Partners: Oasis Senior Volunteers and local weather person 

As part of their lessons on weather, students will visit the digital dome planetarium at The Children’s Museum of Science and Technology and experience an exciting adventure called The Zula Patrol - Under The Weather. This will be followed by a classroom visit by a local weather person. 

Man of La Mancha 

School: Stephen & Harriet Meyers Middle School 

Community Partners: Capital Rep

The Foreign Language teachers are creating a unit on the popular literary tale Don Quixote by Author Miguel de Cervantes. As a culminating activity to this unit students will travel to Capital Repertory Theater and view the performance of Man of La Mancha.


TOAST Play Yard 


School: TOAST

Community Partners: Albany YMCA, Albany School District Operations, Standish Family foundation, Curtis Lumber, Home Depot, McDonald’s, and Pizzeria Uno.

The new play yard promises to bring science and environmental awareness, as well as important recreational activities to TOAST students throughout the year. 

AHS Mentoring Program

School: Albany High School

Community Partners: National Black Child Development Institute, Fathers Incorporated, Fathers and Families Coalitions of America, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, and Christian Memorial Church

In its second year, this program has expanded to include  female as well as male students in an intensive mentoring program that empowers high school seniors to take the necessary next steps to attain a college or vocational degree or sustainable employment.   Studentsl meet with mentors bi-monthly during the school year and participate in various educational field trips.

Falcon Foresters

Schools: All Elementary Schools

Community Partners: the Albany School District (ASD), the College of St. Rose, the City of Albany, the NYS Department of Education (Project Learning Tree (PLT)), NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (pending), Stewarts Shops, and the SEFCU Foundation

The project brings the nationally recognized and NYS-supported "Project Learning Tree" to elementary schools throughout the Albany School District and trains elementary-school teachers in specifics about the program. It will ultimately involve 660 elementary-school children in Falcon Forester activities with year-round action-oriented lessons and Arbor Day tree planting. In addition mini grants are available to encourage innovative "green" activities in our schools.
