AFE Heroes

 

Each year AFE recognizes individuals and organizations that have made a difference in the lifes of Albany’s students. 

2011

CDPHP provides first-rate health insurance and supports innovative health care. In addition, CDPHP is an ongoing sponsor of Albany’s schools, including being  primary sponsor of AFE's Gala Reception and the District's Hall of Fame events. 

Libby Post is a passionate advocate on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and is committed to establishing strong libraries for New York State's communities.

 

2010

SEFCU funds educational opportunities, mentoring programs, and community service. Their employees are encouraged to become part of the community and volunteer. Nine Albany schools have trees purchased by SEFCU and planted with their employees’ assistance.

 

Rob LaRocca moved to Albany and saw the need to enhance programs for art, music, and theater in the Albany schools. He created the Albany Charity for Arts in Education that now brings funding and artists to our schools.

 

2009

 

The National Urban Alliance introduced new teaching methods to Albany’s schools and helped significantly raise students’ test scores

 

 Dr. Eva Joseph, Albany’s superintendent from 2004 until 2009, made noteworthy improvements for the District. The AFE professional development awards are testimony to her commitment not only to students, but to the staff of the District.

 

2008

 

Charles Touhey worked with the District and AFE to create the Teacher Certification Grant Project, helping qualified teaching assistants to complete their education and move into teaching positions.

 

Park Playhouse provides students exposure to theater professionals and first hand training in musical theater. Students participate in workshops that develop their talents and are exposed to the creative and business aspects of theater management.

 

 

2007

 

 Elizabeth Coco, founder of MicroKnowledge, is a community leader who cares deeply about the health and well being of children in the Capital Region.

 

Boys and Girls Club of Albany is an invaluable resource to students during their high school years.
