Application
The two-year International Baccalaureate Program (IB) emphasizes critical thinking, intercultural understanding and exposure to a variety of points of view. It cultivates respect for other cultures and encourages students to become active learners and well-rounded, engaged citizens. The program requires extensive training for teachers, completion of a rigorous curriculum for students, and ongoing external validation to insure the program's integrity. IB is widely recognized as the premier high school program in the world.
The Albany School District was approved to offer the program and its first group of students started in September 2005. The School District covers all costs except the fees for the IB exams.
About IB Scholarships
The purpose of the AFE scholarships is to ensure that the IB program includes an economically diverse student population and that the IB exam costs, at approximately $1,100 per student over the two-year program, do not preclude students without sufficient financial resourses from enrolling. Students from families who are eligible for free or reduced lunch program have their IB exam fee covered by federal assistance through the District. This scholarship is for families who are above that income level; yet face financial challenges that make paying the IB exam fees difficult.
