The idea to establish an educational fund for the Albany City School District was conceived in 1998 at a forum sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Capital District and the Washington DC Education Network. A diverse group of parents, educators, business people, and interested members of the community committed to quality education for Albany’s students, worked together to incorporate the Albany Fund for Education (AFE) as a non-profit organization in Spring 1998. AFE operated under the umbrella of the Council of Community Services, initially its fiscal agent. AFE received its own authorization for U.S. Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3) status on September 27, 1999. Since then AFE has brought forward new ideas, approaches, and funding that would not otherwise be made available to advance our schools.
